Tyre Rolling Resistance

WHAT IS ROLLING RESISTANCE?

When a wheel turns around, the tyre tread area bends and deforms as it comes in contact with the ground. As the rubber deforms it gives out energy in the form of heat. This is the source of around 90% of the tyres rolling resistance. The more rolling resistance a tyre has, the more power is required from the engine to move the car along. If the engine is working harder to overcome the tyres rolling resistance, it will use more fuel.

By using advanced tyre design techniques, tyre manufacturers are able to produce tyres which are low 'rolling resistance'. Many tyres manufacturers produce a low rolling resistance range sometimes using names like, eco, green and fuel-saver tyres. Low rolling resistance tyres reduce vehicle running costs, and reduce CO2 and other harmful exhaust emissions. With the effects of global warming, climate change and the high cost of fuel becoming ever more important, the benefits of low rolling resistance tyres have never been more relevant.
